Image Upscaling: Standard Resampling vs AI Super-Resolution

Resizing does not create original detail

Traditional enlargement methods interpolate new pixels between existing ones. The algorithm can create a smoother result at a larger size, but it does not recover fine texture that was never recorded. For example, enlarging a tiny logo may smooth its edges while leaving letters or fine details blurred.

What AI upscaling changes

AI super-resolution models use learned patterns to generate plausible higher-resolution texture and edges. The output may appear crisper than a straightforward interpolation. That extra detail is generated, however; it may not faithfully represent the original scene, and the model can produce unexpected artifacts or alter fine details.

Choosing the right technique

For ordinary layout requirements, use a standard image resize first and evaluate the result. If the source is too small for the target use, a high-quality original is preferable whenever it exists. AI upscaling can be useful when there is no better source and visual quality matters more than exact pixel fidelity.

Performance, cost and privacy

AI upscaling is typically more computationally expensive than a browser resize. With CompIMG, standard resizing runs locally on your device. AI upscaling requires the site owner to enable a Cloudflare Images processing integration and the user to send the image to that remote service. Its availability and cost depend on the configured Cloudflare account.

Inspect AI results carefully

Look for transformed logos, repeated textures, unnaturally sharp faces and other invented details. Keep the original next to the output for comparison. Avoid treating an AI-enlarged picture as evidence of what the original image definitively contained.
